Seventh night of season 10 of the Dana White's Contender Series on Tuesday at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas: five fights, and six UFC contracts. Dana White signed two losing fighters, and sent the main event winner home empty-handed.
Who won the DWCS 93 main event?
Norbert Novenyi Jr. takes the fight by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) over Theo Haig, at middleweight.
Haig wins the first round with his takedowns, then the 26-year-old Hungarian takes over on the feet in the second and third, against an opponent as spent as he is by the end. Novenyi Jr. moves to 11-1, a fourth straight win, but does not get the contract: "Unfortunately, my friend, I didn't see anything tonight that makes me say, 'I got to have this guy in the UFC'," says Dana White, who wants to take another look at him. Haig (7-2), already on the show in season 9, falls short on his second attempt.
Why did two losing fighters sign with the UFC?
Because Dana White decided it "takes two guys to make a great fight", and said so twice in one night.
Piero Guaylupo beats Callum Connor by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at lightweight, in fifteen minutes of nonstop exchanges: 478 strikes thrown between them. The 21-year-old Peruvian stays unbeaten (12-0); the Englishman from Manchester Top Team takes the first loss of his career (8-1), his face badly marked. Both went to hospital, both are signed. "One of the greatest fights you'll ever see on Tuesdays or Saturdays or any other day. This fight could be up for Fight of the Year contender," says White.
Alvi Dasuyev beats Jaden Ortega by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at welterweight. The 24-year-old Chechen-born Belgian drops Ortega early and keeps landing for three rounds without ever making him quit. Dasuyev moves to 10-0; Ortega, unbeaten until now, falls to 6-1 and gets his contract anyway.
What else happened on the card?
Marcos Degli chokes Paris Moran out on the feet, fourteen seconds from the end of the second round. The Brazilian, who took him down early, finishes with a one-armed rear-naked choke. A thirteenth straight win (15-3); the American, a Fury FC champion out of Texas, drops to 14-4.
Damian Piwowarczyk turns it around five seconds from the bell. The Polish KSW veteran takes the worst of the first round, then stops Quissua with punches at 4:55. He moves to 12-4, a fourth straight win; Quissua, who trains in Germany, loses for the first time (8-1).
