Matchday 2 of the 2026-27 LaLiga season was played from Thursday 20 to Monday 24 August 2026 — before matchday 1 was even over: the calendar was reshuffled to give clubs whose internationals were coming back from the World Cup more rest. Real Madrid and Barcelona therefore began their season with this second round.

The talking points

Barcelona opened their season with a statement. The defending champions waited until matchday 2 to play their first game — and settled it 5-0 at Elche. Almost a quarter of the round's twenty-two goals came in that one match.

Real Madrid won without convincing. A 2-1 win at Espanyol on their first outing, in a round that suited visitors better than hosts: three away wins — Sevilla, Real Madrid, Barcelona — against only two at home.

Sevilla produced the result of the round. A 3-1 win at San Mamés, against an Athletic Club beaten at home on their opening night.

Atlético dropped two points straight away. A 2-2 draw at home to Villarreal, in a round where half the fixtures ended level — five out of ten, including two goalless draws, Valencia - Celta Vigo and Osasuna - Levante.

Two promoted sides met as early as matchday 2. Málaga and Deportivo La Coruña, up together from the second division, cancelled each other out 1-1. The third promoted club, Racing Santander, lost 1-0 at Getafe.

beIN Sports no longer carries LaLiga. After fourteen years, the Spanish league has moved to DAZN and Disney+, who share the rights co-exclusively until the end of the 2028-29 season.

The season format

LaLiga has 20 clubs and 38 matchdays, from 15 August 2026 to 30 May 2027. This is the 96th edition of the Spanish championship.

Racing Santander (champions), Deportivo La Coruña (runners-up) and Málaga (play-off winners) come up from the second division.
