Arthur Gea beats Ben Shelton (No. 3) 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday 11 October, the first win of his career over a top-10 player. He is the last Frenchman left in the draw, with Quentin Halys, Adrian Mannarino and Arthur Fils all knocked out in the same round.
How did Arthur Gea beat Ben Shelton?
Through two tie-breaks. In an hour-long first set, Gea serves for it at 5-4 without closing it out, then takes the tie-break 7-5. In the second, he drops serve at 3-3, breaks straight back, and controls the second tie-break, 7-3.
Shelton, world No. 4, is the US Open runner-up; Gea, a lucky loser from qualifying, reached the last 16 in New York. The 21-year-old Frenchman had knocked out Ugo Humbert in the previous round.
Ranked 56th at the start of the tournament, Gea sits 48th in the live rankings: he is on course to break into the top 50 for the first time.
Who does he play in the last 16?
Czech Jakub Mensik, the No. 13 seed, who beat Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. The match is on Tuesday 13 October.
How did the other Frenchmen go out?
- Quentin Halys, on Sunday, to Alexander Zverev (No. 1), 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3. The German had already beaten him in the second round of the US Open.
- Adrian Mannarino, on Sunday, to Karen Khachanov (No. 26), 6-2, 6-4, two days after his win over Flavio Cobolli.
- Arthur Fils (No. 8), on Monday, to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, 7-5, 6-4.
Why does Shelton's defeat matter for Zverev?
Because it opens one of the two doors to the year-end No. 1 ranking. According to the ATP, Zverev would clinch it by reaching the semi-finals in Shanghai, or if Carlos Alcaraz and Shelton were both knocked out.
Alcaraz (No. 2) falls on Monday to Belgium's Zizou Bergs, 7-5, 7-6(4), the day after Shelton's defeat: the second condition is met.
The third round also claims Taylor Fritz (No. 11), beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Frances Tiafoe (No. 7), beaten by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
