Arthur Fils reached the first Masters 1000 final of his career on Saturday 22 August in Cincinnati. The Frenchman will face American Frances Tiafoe.
How Arthur Fils got there
In the semi-final, the 21st seed saw off Italy's Flavio Cobolli, the world No. 10 and seventh seed, in straight sets: 6-3, 6-4, in 1hr 07min.
Fils dropped just six points on serve in the second set. Cobolli, a Roland-Garros finalist two months earlier, never found a way in.
A flawless run
Fils did not lose a set all week.
In the last 16 he beat Australia's Alex de Minaur (6-3, 6-4). In the quarter-finals on Thursday 20 August he swept aside Argentina's Thiago Agustín Tirante, the world No. 50, 6-3, 6-2 in 64 minutes — winning 79% of points behind his first serve and conceding no break points at all.
Why this final matters
At 22, Fils becomes the tenth Frenchman to reach a Masters 1000 final since 1990, after Guy Forget, Cédric Pioline, Sébastien Grosjean, Richard Gasquet, Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gaël Monfils, Ugo Humbert and Arthur Rinderknech.
It is also his third Masters 1000 semi-final of the season, after Miami and Madrid: no French player had managed that many in a single year since Guy Forget in 1991.
The run lifts him to a career-high world No. 11 in the live rankings.
No French winner since 2014
No French player has won a Masters 1000 since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto in 2014, where he beat Roger Federer in the final (7-5, 7-6).
In Cincinnati itself the last French winner goes back further still: Guy Forget, in 1991.

The final is played on Sunday 23 August at 22:30 French time.
Standing in the way is Frances Tiafoe, the world No. 23, who beat compatriot Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 6-3 in 1hr 42min. The American had to save three set points in the opening set before pulling clear.
