France play for their place in the Davis Cup Final 8 on Friday and Saturday in Quebec City, and they play it without their best player: Arthur Fils has withdrawn. Paul-Henri Mathieu takes Arthur Rinderknech, Benjamin Bonzi, Quentin Halys, Luca Van Assche and Pierre-Hugues Herbert to face Felix Auger-Aliassime's Canada.
Three days were enough to empty the French draw at Flushing Meadows. Gael Monfils played the last Grand Slam match of his career there, and Quentin Halys, Arthur Rinderknech, Benjamin Bonzi and Leolia Jeanjean are all out. One French player is left in the tournament, and it is the one who had already packed his bags: Arthur Gea plays his round-of-16 match on Monday.
At Flushing Meadows on Tuesday and Wednesday, the rain ended up mattering more than the draw: three days of delays, and a first round completed forty-eight hours apart. The French leave these two days divided — two first wins in New York, four exits, and a single survivor in the third round.
The opening day of the main draw served up the biggest shock Flushing Meadows had to offer: Novak Djokovic is out at the first hurdle. Among the French, Arthur Rinderknech and Luca Van Assche go through, rain pushed five matches into the next day, and neither Carlos Alcaraz nor Arthur Fils plays before Monday.
