Olympique Lyonnais lose 1-2 to Fenerbahce at the Groupama Stadium on Wednesday 26 August, missing out on the Champions League league phase. The Turks, held to a 1-1 draw in Istanbul, overturn the tie in the first half and win 3-2 on aggregate.

The talking points

Muriqi and Brown kill the tie in four minutes. On 24 minutes, Vedat Muriqi opens the scoring with a composed finish after a cross, then Archie Brown doubles the lead with a header at the far post (28'). The Groupama Stadium is stunned before it has even found its feet.

Fofana relights the stadium, but two Lyon goals are ruled out. Malick Fofana pulls one back with a left-footed volley (61'), a stunning strike. The hosts then push: Openda has a goal disallowed for offside (64'), Boudache equalises on 73 minutes, but the referee cancels it after a VAR review. On 90 minutes, Boudache hits the side netting. Two goals ruled out, no third scored.

Fenerbahce qualify for the league phase with a 3-2 aggregate win. The league phase draw is scheduled for Thursday 27 August at 18:00 — without Lyon, who drop into the Europa League.

How did the tie play out?

1-1 then 1-2 (3-2 on aggregate). On 18 August in Istanbul, in front of 41,655 spectators, Lyon go ahead first: Lois Openda opens the scoring in the 40th minute, set up by Corentin Tolisso. The lead does not survive half-time. Straight after the restart, on 47 minutes, Mason Greenwood levels with a left-footed strike, from a Kerem Akturkoglu pass.

The return at the Groupama Stadium goes south: Muriqi (24') and Brown (28') give the visitors the lead, and despite Fofana halving the deficit (61') and two disallowed goals, Lyon cannot turn it around.

Who was missing on Wednesday?

For Lyon, the list is short: Khalis Merah is the only injury absentee. Julien Duranville is out of the squad, but that is a call by Paulo Fonseca rather than a fitness problem.

For the Turkish side, the blow is heavier. Two starters are unavailable: Kerem Akturkoglu, in concussion protocol, and Marco Asensio, with a strain in his left thigh. That is the man who assisted the first-leg equaliser and one of the club's main attacking outlets.

Why did this match matter so much to Lyon?

Lyon had not played in the Champions League since the 2019-20 season, the year of the Lisbon Final 8 and the semi-final against Bayern. Six seasons away from Europe's biggest stage, for a club for which it was routine around the turn of the 2010s.

The losers of this play-off are not out of Europe: they drop into the Europa League league phase. But the gap between the two competitions, sporting and financial, has never been wider.

What did Paulo Fonseca say?

The Portuguese coach said his squad was ready before the match: "My players are very motivated. It's an important moment for us and for the club." He expected an opponent that comes to play rather than sit on the draw, and wanted his own side to balance ambition with control.

Fonseca also pointed to the depth he has regained, after seasons in which injuries to Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah emptied his attacking options. Asked about Fofana's future, with the winger attracting interest, he confirmed the club had turned down offers and that the Belgian was fully committed.

Lois Openda, who scored in the first leg, described "positive anticipation" rather than pressure, and was counting on the Groupama Stadium crowd.

What changes did Paulo Fonseca make?

The Lyon coach tried to turn things around in the second half. He brought on Athekame and Boudache on 62 minutes for Nuamah and Maitland-Niles, then Sulc on 76 minutes for Tessmann. Late on, Tagliafico and Bidstrup replaced Abner and Morton. The Turks responded with the introductions of Lukaku (80') and Kahveci (81').
