Arthur Rinderknech and Quentin Halys are through the first round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday 3 November: Rinderknech goes through when Francisco Cerundolo (No. 16) retires at 3-6, 7-6(2), 2-0, and Halys beats Britain's Arthur Fery 7-6(6), 7-5. Moise Kouame, Benjamin Bonzi and Arthur Gea are out: five Frenchmen play the second round, including Arthur Fils, who faces Tomas Machac.

How did Arthur Rinderknech get through?

From a long way back. Cerundolo takes the first set in 32 minutes, then serves for the match in the second. Rinderknech breaks back, wins the tie-break 7-2 and leads 2-0 in the third set when Cerundolo retires, after 1hr 42min.

The Argentine had received treatment at the end of the second set, apparently troubled by his back, before losing eight points in a row. Rinderknech admits he struggled to get going.

The world No. 68 records his first win since the US Open, after four straight defeats. In the second round he faces Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci, who beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-3.

How did Quentin Halys beat Arthur Fery?

In straight sets on Court 1: a close first set settled in a tie-break, won 8-6, then 7-5. In the second round Halys meets American Frances Tiafoe, the No. 7 seed, who had a first-round bye.
