The transfer market shut in France on Tuesday evening. Ligue 1 comes out of it with a figure that sums up its season before the season has even taken shape: €1.33bn in sales, a record positive balance, and two transfers that broke the same record five days apart.

When did the window close?

The summer window closed on Tuesday 1 September 2026 at 7.59pm French time. Past that deadline, no contract lodged takes effect.

The summer ran in two stages: an exceptional window from 1 to 10 June, forced by the FIFA calendar, then the main period from 16 June to 1 September.

How much did Ligue 1 sell?

€1.33bn. The French league confirms its status as a selling league, and does so on a scale it had never reached before.

The balance is €730m in the black — French clubs took in far more than they spent. The summer of 2025 had already produced a positive balance of €366m: the figure has doubled in a year.

Sky Sports, counting in pounds, reaches the same conclusion: £490.6m spent against £957.6m in sales, making Ligue 1 the only one of Europe's five major leagues to finish the summer in profit.

The Premier League alone bought more than €800m worth of Ligue 1 players, according to Transfermarkt data.

This is not good news in disguise. The mass selling and the collapse in investment are the direct consequence of the crisis in French football's television rights.

What was the biggest transfer of the summer?

Bradley Barcola, from PSG to Liverpool, confirmed on Monday 31 August: €125m, plus €20m in bonuses. Liverpool also pay €5m to Lyon in training compensation.

It is the highest fee ever paid to a French club for a player. The winger leaves Paris after three seasons, 152 matches, 39 goals and 37 assists, and two Champions League titles.

It took five days for that record to change hands. On 26 August, Ayyoub Bouaddi left Lille for Manchester City for €95m plus €5m in bonuses, becoming at 18 the most expensive Ligue 1 player ever sold abroad. A Lille academy product and a former France Under-21 captain before he opted for Morocco in 2026, the midfielder had played 96 matches for the club, 25 of them in Europe.

Behind those two, the summer also took away Goncalo Ramos, Lee Kang-in, Mason Greenwood, Jeremy Jacquet, Matias Fernandez-Pardo (Lille to Newcastle, €60m) and Mamadou Sangare (Lens, €48m).

Which clubs actually spent?

Three. Of the eighteen Ligue 1 clubs, only Paris FC, Auxerre and Le Havre end the summer having spent more than they sold. Paris FC post the heaviest negative balance in the league: €79m invested against €6.8m in sales, or -€72.2m.

At the other end, the surpluses pile up, on Dicodusport's count:

  • Lille: +€120m;
  • Strasbourg: +€106m;
  • Lens: more than €100m, the Sangare sale adding to the €18m Marseille paid to trigger Facundo Medina's purchase option;
  • Marseille: +€50m.

Marseille and Lyon spent the summer under an austerity regime neither had known before, forced to sell without being able to recruit.

What did PSG do?

The reigning European champions did what they never do: sell more than they buy, banking more than €350m in outgoing fees.

Five players came in, among them Maghnes Akliouche, confirmed on 6 August, Ferran Torres a few days later, and Mika Godts, the last arrival of the summer, from Ajax Amsterdam for €55m including bonuses.

On the way out, besides Barcola: Randal Kolo Muani to Juventus, Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan, Lee Kang-in to Atletico Madrid.

And elsewhere in Europe?

The contrast is brutal. Premier League clubs spent £3.48bn, a record, against £3.19bn the previous summer. Manchester City lead the spending with £440.3m, ahead of Chelsea (£342.4m), Tottenham (£334m) and Newcastle (£275.2m).

Two transfers share the top of the market at £125m: Enzo Fernandez, from Chelsea to Manchester City, and Alexander Isak, from Newcastle to Liverpool.

The other leagues are a long way back: £843.6m spent in Serie A, £603.5m in LaLiga, £507.6m in the Bundesliga.
